Strategic Thought, the ERM Company, was founded in 1987 as a software development company specializing in the integration of mission-critical enterprise applications. The Company achieved sustained organic growth in turnover and profits and was privately owned, with shareholders directly employed in the business for over 15 years. In July 2005 Strategic Thought floated on the London Stock Exchange's Alternative Investment Market, ticker symbol “STR”.

Towards the end of the 1990’s the decision was taken to move the company from its position as a niche consultancy to a product provider. With close existing ties to both the defence and finance industries, a gap was soon identified in the risk management market. All risk management solutions at the time, regardless of whether the tool might be required for project use in the defence world, or for operational use in the financial world, were designed for use by individuals or within small teams. It seemed clear, that in order to get the most out of risk management, an organisation would need to take into account information from across the business ensuring that decisions could be made based on all the available and current data.

Development of Active Risk Manager began in 1999 and the solution was launched in November 2000, with AMEC signing up as the first customer. Today, Active Risk Manager has been rolled out to more than 75 customers, and now supports over 25,000 users. It has been hailed by leading analysts and risk professionals as the most comprehensive risk management software solution available today.

Strategic Thought expanded its risk management portfolio in 2005 with the acquisition of RisGen, a complimentary ERM application with a strong customer base in the government and health sectors. In order to ensure Active Risk Manager’s continued leadership of the marketplace, the functionality of RisGen will be incorporated into ARM over the next 18 months.

The original services business continues to thrive. We have been an IBM Premier Business Partner since 1999 and have received numerous awards for our innovative work. We are experts in integration services and the presentation of corporate knowledge. We have delivered powerful IT based business solutions to companies across all industry sectors and are particularly recognized as being one of the leading middleware solution providers to the Financial Services, Telco and Retail sectors. Strategic Thought has now also achieved Microsoft Gold Partner status and its innovative SharePoint services team has seen constant and exciting growth since its inception in spring 2006.
